When a patient comes into the office of an interventional radiologist, they will undergo a series of tests that include computed tomography (CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, and x-rays. These tests will help the radiologist to diagnose whether or not a patient has cancerous or benign cells in their body. Once they have determined whether or not the tests have shown signs of cancer or disease, the doctor will usually recommend an additional procedure called a biopsy. During the biopsy, the doctor will remove a small piece of tissue from the body. This piece of tissue will be tested to make sure that the cancer or disease has not spread to another part of the body.

After diagnostic radiology has been performed on the patient, the radiologist will discuss the treatment options with the patient. The treatments that can be used will often depend on the types of cancers that the patient might have and also the location of the cancers. Most doctors will only use several treatment options for patients with various types of cancers. If the cancer has spread or has reached an advanced stage, open surgery may be required in order to remove the remaining cancerous cells from the body.
